EUROCALL 2021: CALL and Professionalisation

First call for papers for the 2021 EUROCALL (European Association of Computer-Assisted Language Learning) Conference co-organised by CNAM Paris and Sorbonne Université

Submission deadline for EUROCALL 2021: 15 February 2021

We welcome proposals addressing CALL and Professionalisation from theoretical and practical perspectives in relation to the many forms and contexts of CALL.

Technology - the new mediator of learning - has both revolutionised the way we learn languages and created a sense of urgency in the need to modernise the initial and ongoing training of today’s and tomorrow’s professionals.

As a result, by focusing on research, technological development and innovation, this conference will explore the potential of technology and of the expansion of educational opportunities in foreign languages to provide a basis for addressing the current issues both higher education and the job market are facing in the 21st century.

A key aspect of the current socio-economic reality is to support learners in increasing their foreign language skills and other competencies required in today’s technology mediated society (team work, project management or the use of digital technologies for example) and help them enhance their employability on the job market.

Submissions may include (but are not restricted to) the following subthemes as they relate to professionalisation:

  • Professional development
  • Teacher education
  • Assessment
  • Multimodality
  • Interculturality
  • Soft skills
  • Internationalisation
  • Translation (tools)

Format of abstracts

All presentation categories require the submission of an abstract that does not exceed 500 words, excluding the title, references, names and affiliations.

Please note that this conference is being planned as a blended conference. COVID-related circumstances permitting, onsite and online sessions will be interwoven. You will therefore be asked to indicate your participation preference when you submit your abstract (either onsite or online participation).

Please note that it will only be your preference at this point and that presentation type (online or onsite) will be confirmed at the same time as your notification of acceptance. The fact that a paper has been accepted does not mean that it will necessarily be presented on site. All presenters should therefore be prepared to give their presentations online and to pre-record a 20-minute presentation video in case the public health situation does not allow for as many onsite presentation slots as we anticipate.

Presenters will be given preference for onsite attendance.

When submitting your abstract, you will select from the list of conference subthemes as well as from the following categories:

1. Individual papers

Research: Papers focusing on a clearly specified research topic supported by a rationale, including a brief literature review. The thrust may be empirical or theoretical. The methodology should be clearly outlined as well as the actual or potential findings.

Research and Development: Papers focusing on the development of pedagogies, programmes, and projects in technology-rich environments. The research should be original.

Reflective Practice: Practice-oriented papers dealing with the integration of technologies in different contexts and for different purposes. The reflection could take the form of evaluation or action-research. Proposals should include elements that are of relevance beyond the context of the practice described.

European project: This year’s conference will again offer a forum for the dissemination of EU-funded projects.

Format of onsite presentations

Format of online presentations

30-minute presentations (20 minutes for presentation, 10 minutes for discussion).

Presenters will first upload the videos of their pre-recorded presentations (slideshow with voice-over) before July 15th.

Interactions will then be engaged either:

- online, in virtual meet-ups

- between onsite and online participants (3 online participants dealing with the same theme will give a 3min pitch based on 2 slides, followed by a discussion).

2. Posters – Digital format only

Since posters aim to attract attention to a particular project or research domain, they should mainly focus on work in progress. Multimodal formats are welcome. Presenters will upload their posters before July 15th. Interactions will then be engaged online in virtual meet-ups. A prize will be awarded for the best PhD student poster.

How to submit your proposal

Proposals should be submitted through the OpenConf system from 15 December 2020: https://www.openconf.org/EUROCALL2021
